The month of Elul is a time of special closeness
between the Divine Groom and His bride Israel. This is alluded to by the
fact that, in Hebrew, the first letters of the verse "I am to my beloved
and my beloved is to me" (ani ledodi v'dodi li) spell the word Elul.
Elul is a time for good resolutions, improving
things which have not been perfect. The Sages tell us that during this
month we have a special spiritual power to help us change ourselves for
the better. In fact, we have a special closeness to G-d. This is expressed
by an intriguing image: the king in the field.
